First Steps

My working life began at the age of 17 with two Spanish tour operators specializing in bus excursions. The trips I led as a tour guide departed from Madrid and toured Andalucia over four or five nights, visiting the main Andalusian capitals throughout the summer. The companies were Pullmantur and Julia Tours. I managed groups of up to 17 nationalities, using three languages during the circuits. The routes lasted 4, 5, and 7 nights.

Club de Vacaciones

In 1980, I was offered the opportunity to become the assistant representative of a well-known Spanish tour operator at the time, Club de Vacaciones, in New York. We handled a total of 270 passengers weekly for 7 months, flying with Spantax airline.

For a season and a half, I worked as an Area Manager in New York, assisting clients, booking their hotels, and selling them as many excursions as possible, including trips to Washington, Philadelphia, Manhattan, Niagara Falls, Boston and more.

It was a unique experience at the age of 20.

Mundicolor

I was offered a position in another tourism company within the group, Mundicolor, working in the inbound department in Madrid, where I was responsible for receiving and attending to clients. After four months, feeling the role lacked responsibility, I requested to manage a branch to increase my responsibilities. They offered me the choice of Alicante or Ibiza, and I chose Mundicolor Ibiza. Throughout the summer, I was in charge of reservations, attending to clients and selling excursions. I was managing different nationalities with two people under my supervision.

During the winter of 1981, I performed the same role at Mundicolor Gran Canaria, specifically in the south, in the San Agustin/Playa del Inglés area, for the entire winter.

Return to Ibiza

In the summers of 1982 and 1983, I returned to Ibiza with Viajes Ibiza, one of the most important inbound agencies on the island, part of the same group as Unión Express Viajes, which represented Mundicolor in Ibiza. They offered me to be Area Manager for two British companies, Sun World (Exeter) and Forward International (Birmingham.) I was responsible for 140-150 weekly clients from each company throughout the summer in Ibiza.

During the first few months of 1984, I worked independently as an official guide in Ibiza.

New Horizons

I decided to pursue a Master's in Marketing in the United States, in Stamford, but just before leaving, the French multinational adventure travel company Nouvelles Frontières (Nuevas Fronteras), opened offices in Madrid and Barcelona.

As a global leader in cheap flights around the world and the largest adventure travel company, which aligned with one of my passions, I decided to swap the marketing master's for my love of adventure and joined the company for the office opening. I didn’t hesitate and became their commercial manager.

I worked in sales for a year, during which we launched numerous promotional campaigns nationwide, establishing many adventure travel destinations from Spain.

Entalpía

In 1985, the members of the company and I, believed that the world of adventure travel was just beginning in Spain, and it was an excellent alternative. So, we decided to create our own adventure travel agency called Entalpía, a Spanish agency for Spanish clients.

For five years, we introduced the concept of adventure travel for Spaniards to destinations such as Asia, South America, some parts of Europe, but especially Africa—both Arab and Sub-Saharan Africa—using 4x4 vehicles, trucks, Land Rovers, and similar, crossing the Trans-Saharan routes, and exploring Kenya, Tanzania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Zaire, and many more. We also offered a variety of hiking, trekking and other adventure activities. Our success was such that we created a wholesale brand, Aventura en el Mundo. It wasn’t the type of product suited for traditional travel agencies, so unfortunately, it didn’t achieve the expected success.

Música sobre ruedas

As a music lover, I came up with the idea of creating a brand within Entalpía, which I named Música sobre ruedas (Music on Wheels). The concept was to offer trips to cities where pop/rock top musicians were having concerts. We were able to transport a large numbers of attendees to these concert venues by providing buses and tickets.

We sold directly to customers or through record stores across the country, providing buses, guides and concert tickets.

We organized numerous trips to concerts, starting with Talk Talk in Salamanca and Al Jarreau at the Vitoria Jazz Festival.

Among the most notable:

  • We put together 15 buses from Madrid to Montpellier for Bruce Springsteen concert
  • Another 4 buses from Madrid to Paris to see Prince
  • We brought 12,000 people from all over the country to Madrid to see U2, Pretenders, and UB40 in concert (Santiago Bernabéu Stadium)
  • We also brought 15,000 people from all over Spain by bus and train to Barcelona (Camp Nou) to attend a concert organized by Amnesty International commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They sang Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Tracey Chapman, Último de la Fila and Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour.

Zona de baile

The Zona de Baile was a musical magazine project led by one of Entalpía’s partners, Manuel González de la Peña. It was founded to introduce the new electronic music that was emerging in Spain in the late 80s. It was very successful, they published several issues of the magazine and let to the creation of a TV music contest called La Quinta Marcha, where people like Penélope Cruz and Jesús Vázquez began their careers.

During three years, I worked on the magazine commercial team.

Cereza

The name Cereza stands for CEntral de REservas de alojamientos en la naturaleZA (Accommodation Booking Center in Nature).

In 1990, I embarked on a new project: the study, development, and launch of a rural tourism wholesaler.

For 6 months I studied, analysed and carried out a project feasibility budget to see if a new Rural Travel Wholesaler would be profitable as an innovative product in the tourism market. I was supported and mentored by the renowned hotel consultant Daniel Gutiérrez. He already had Minitours, a wholesaler for traditional hotel and aparthotel accommodations throughout Spain.

Over the course of four years, we created CEREZA, a program featuring the best charming hotels across Spain, as well as a wide range of accommodations such as villas, country houses, rural farmhouses, and other types of rural tourism products, targeting both Spanish and foreign tourists.

The key was expanding this offer to the Central European market, which was accustomed to traveling for at least a week during several months of the year. This product marked a significant turning point in the offering and development of rural tourism across Spain.

Catai Tours

In 1990, following the closure MiniTours group companies, I was offered the opportunity to create the Secret Europe program and oversee all inbound tourism for Spain for the wholesaler Catai Tours (a pioneer for many years in travel to the Middle East and long-haul destinations). With Matilde Torres, we developed and established two program options: Secret Europe, for the national outbound market, aimed at all Spanish travel agencies; and a mid-to-high-end product focused on luxury, catering to high-end inbound tourism with top-class hotels, circuits, and bespoke options for elite clients, mainly from Asia.

The program was designed to encourage traveling to Spain for the Asian and Middle Eastern markets. Over the years, these two products have been highly successful within Catai Tours.

Ecoibiza

In 1997, I decided to change my life, seeking sun, beach and a better quality of life. Together with my partner, we conducted a marketing study and analyzed the best options along the Spanish coast, both on the mainland and islands, to start the business we each wanted to develop.
The initial choice was Mallorca, but after a series of circumstances, we ended up in Ibiza. The plan was to create a company specializing in tourist accommodations, rural houses and villas with pools. It was challenging to establish, as at that time, local real estate agencies only offered rentals for a minimum of one month.
We aimed to offer charming hotels, agritourism, rural hotels and all kinds of nature-related activities. Ecoibiza was finally founded as a travel agency and it gradually specialized solely in villa and rural house rentals. The brand was later refined to Ecoibiza Villas and Concierge. From 1997 to 2022 (when I sold the company) it developed a portfolio of 220 products, having managed over 900 tourist properties during its 26 years, with 60 villas exclusively managed by the company in the final years.

Secret Walks

Secret Walk Ibiza is the brand offering hikes across Ibiza. It offers routes ranging from a minimum of 8 km to over 20 km, exploring the most charming and beautiful spots on Ibiza and Formentera. Almost all of the routes follow trails with views to the Mediterranean Sea providing a stunning setting to discover the beauty of the island countryside.

It was created for individuals and groups with a variety of the length and difficulty.

Full fridge

Full Fridge is another initiative I developed in recent years, particularly during the early stages of Ecoibiza. It offers potential clients staying in tourist accommodations, to buy groceries with up to 700 different products available at regular supermarket prices. This service allows customers to have the groceries at their holiday rental homes in Ibiza, Mallorca or Menorca, when they arrive.

This service aims to facilitate and improve the customer experience during their holiday, saving them from having to find a supermarket and go shopping on arrival.

Additionally, clients can do grocery shopping during its stay at any time, allowing them to enjoy their vacation without visiting the supermarket. This is an immensely convenient option for clients.

Local Secrets

This is a new App project with all the tourist information for the main destinations around the world. With over 60 files containing the best information for each place, I am working on the Ibiza’s guide with the knowledge I gained after 26 years recommending Ecoibiza clients the best spots on the island. It includes museums, art galleries, different types of restaurants, nightclubs, beach clubs etc. The app first phase will feature 40 destinations in 2024 and by 2025 it will expand to 110 destinations.
